Case study

Brief

Rutherford Cancer Centre, South Wales, is located in Newport and opened in March 2017. Proton beam therapy will be available in mid 2018. This will be the first centre to be opened by Proton Partners International, and it will be the first operational high energy proton beam therapy centre in the UK. Mike Moran, CEO approached the team at Quad Vision with an idea. His vision was to create a state of the art waiting room where patients and their families faced with a difficult and perhaps anxious situation could have an interactive audio visual focal point for their time spent in the waiting room. Mike also wanted to extend this experience to the separate children’s waiting room. The final solution had to have a high quality look and implementation with the quality extending into the technology, content and visual appearance.

The Solution

Quad Vision were project consultants from the outset, developing the concept and bringing it to fruition, delivering a state of the art audio visual solution with multiple functions and extended uses.

In the main waiting area, Quad Vision installed an impressive 2.5 meter touch interactive wide screen video wall, comprising of four 46” screens with ultra thin bezel.

The system has the ability to stream television, video and internet, plus has a local area and Rutherford Centre information area accessible to all through the touch screen.

A tailor made frame system was designed and built by Quad Vision specifically for this project. The screens are inset into the wall with a glass front weighing 100kgs; the frame allows the glass front section to extend fully away from the wall for ease of screen access and maintenance.

An additional benefit of this system is the ability to use the large video and data wall as a presentation tool with the scope to video and data link with Proton satellite centres in the UK and internationally.

In the children’s waiting area there is an inset 46” screen with the ability to switch from interactive touch screen to TV designed to keep children occupied while waiting. The hard wearing screen is fully designed to withstand this type of environment.

This project combines captivating software with straightforward user control. The result is maximum capacity for patient interaction and requires minimal staff training.
